Sustainable Healthcare through Autonomous Imaging

Accelerating smart MRI and ultrasound solutions to reduce pressure on staff and improve patient care

The Challenge

Realizing the right diagnosis at the right place.

REIMAGINE IMAGING is a public-private program dedicated to bringing innovative diagnostics closer to the patient. By developing data supported autonomous AI solutions.

We actively reduce the burden on clinical gatekeepers and shorten waiting times across the healthcare chain.

Through the synergy of advanced technology and scientific excellence, we strengthen the future of medical imaging while keeping healthcare affordable and sustainable for both staff and patients.

Four high-volume medical areas

To maximize impact on healthcare capacity, REIMAGINE IMAGING focuses on four high-volume medical areas. In these four projects, we develop autonomous solutions tailored to the unique clinical needs and diagnostic challenges of each field.

New development projects enabling faster, better care closer to the patient, reducing pressure on clinicians and unnecessary specialist referrals.

Breast Cancer

Autonomous MRI for mobile screening units

We are developing a dedicated breast MRI featuring integrated coils for optimal contrast. This autonomous technology reduces dependence on experts and enables large-scale, accurate screening for women with dense breast tissue in a comfortable, mobile setting.

Prostate Cancer

Compact MRI triage in a comfortable chair

This project introduces a compact, open MRI system using high‑temperature superconductors, enabling faster, less burdensome diagnostics, fewer unnecessary biopsies, and improved guideline adherence. As an autonomous triage tool, it determines which patients require additional scans, substantially lowering personnel burden and overall healthcare costs.

Vascular Dementia

AI-driven brain scans in elderly care

We are developing an autonomous brain imaging solution that includes a comfortable MRI chair and smart metal detection. Using AI driven decision support, this enables earlier detection of cognitive decline, accurate care intensity stratification, and improved care planning and engagement for patients and their families, delivered within the patient’s own environment.

Abdominal Complaints

AI-guided ultrasound for general practitioners

This application guides GPs through ultrasound exams using real-time visual feedback and deep learning. The technology provides immediate results, allowing for the rapid exclusion of conditions like kidney stones or fatty liver without the need for unnecessary hospital referrals.

Program Partners: Leading the Future of Medical Imaging

REIMAGINE IMAGING is coordinated by a core group of four leading organizations: UMC Utrecht, Maastricht University, Philips Healthcare, and High Tech NL. Together, we combine clinical expertise, scientific excellence, and industrial innovation to realize the transition toward autonomous diagnostics.
